Cops attacked in riot; 100 jailed

Police in the Brabant town of Veen arrested 100 people early Tuesday morning for violently attacking officers there. Police were trying to provide security for firefighters responding to an emergency call when those on the street began launching heavy fireworks at police, and pelting the patrolmen with empty glass bottles. "This led police to charge [the group], of which eight rioters were arrested," a press release stated. "The rest of the group fled into a catering establishment." Police detained the group in the cafe, before transporting an estimated 65 to detention centers in police vans. Police later said they detained a total of 100 people in the case. Firefighters had responded to the Grotestraat for a report of a car engulfed in flames. First responders quickly called police to help create, "a safe working environment."

A squad car was also vandalized during the course of events, police said. "Police will not tolerate verbal [abuse] or physical violence against police officers and others with a public duty, and will always take steps against it," the police stated.
