One dies in fire at senior apartment complex in The Hague
It is now known that the fire, which raged at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a senior housing complex on Wagenstraat in central The Hague killed the occupant of the apartment where the blaze began.
The fire broke out in a third-floor apartment in the senior complex during the night. When firefighters arrived, flames were already shooting from the unit, according to authorities.
About 40 to 50 residents were reportedly evacuated and placed at a nearby hotel and a mosque.
The blaze was brought under control after roughly 30 minutes of firefighting, around 2 a.m. However, the apartment where the fire started was completely destroyed, according to firefighters.
Police confirmed later that the resident of that unit had died as a result of the fire. Earlier communication from the safety region had stated that there were no injuries.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Police said investigators will enter the building once it is safe to do so.
