Dutch Easter weather to swing from rainy Sunday to sunny, milder Monday

Easter in the Netherlands will differ sharply across the holiday weekend, with showers and a cool wind on Sunday, followed by a sunnier and milder Monday, weeronline reports.

On Easter Sunday, light rain showers move from west to east in the morning. Around midday, sunshine will break through across more areas. Temperatures are expected to rise to between 11 and 14 degrees, but a firm southwesterly wind will make conditions feel cooler, according to weeronline. In the evening, skies are forecast to clear nationwide, and winds are forecast to weaken. Temperatures will drop further, making a warm jacket advisable for outdoor activities.

Easter Monday is expected to be more favorable for outdoor plans. Sunshine is to dominate the day, with only occasional cumulus clouds in the afternoon. The southern regions will experience the highest temperatures, ranging from 11 to 15 degrees. A light wind will reportedly allow the sun’s warmth to be more noticeable.

Between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the UV index may reach 3, meaning unprotected skin can burn in 30 to 50 minutes. Authorities advise sunscreen for anyone spending extended time outside.

After the Easter weekend, spring warmth is expected to continue for a brief time. Temperatures may rise slightly, especially in southern regions, where readings could approach 20 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. Later in the week, temperatures are forecast to fall again, with an increasing chance of rain.

In the meantime, long-term meteorological records dating back to 1901 show that the probability of a warm, sunny, and completely dry Easter is just 4 percent, weeronline reported on Easter Sunday.

The chance of temperatures reaching 20 degrees or higher is 6.4 percent. On 45.2 percent of Easter holidays, maximum temperatures range from 10 to 15 degrees.

The long-term average maximum temperature for Easter is 14.0 degrees. In 27.6 percent of cases, maximum temperatures stay below 10 degrees, making cool conditions more common than warm ones.

The coldest Easter on record occurred on March 29, 1964, in De Bilt, where temperatures reached 3.9 degrees on Easter Sunday and 4.5 degrees on Easter Monday.

By contrast, 2011 holds the record for the warmest Easter, with an average maximum temperature of 24.95 degrees. That year marked the first time a tropical Easter day (25 degrees or higher) was recorded. Temperatures reached 26 degrees on Easter Sunday and 23.9 degrees on Easter Monday.

In 2019, Easter came close to matching that record warmth. Temperatures reached 24.1 degrees on Easter Sunday and 24.8 degrees on Easter Monday, producing an average of 24.45 degrees. The 2019 Easter Monday set a record as the warmest since 1901, narrowly surpassing the previous benchmark of 24.7 degrees set on April 18, 1949.

2019 also holds the record for sunshine, with an average of 25.6 hours across both Easter days nationwide. The year 2022 was closely followed by 25.1 hours, while 2011 recorded 24.1 hours of sunshine. On Easter Sunday in both 2019 and 2022, there were 13.2 hours of sunshine, while the record for Easter Monday remains 14.3 hours, measured on April 19, 1992.
