Warm air set to lift temperatures late in June, but July outlook turns uncertain

A cool and changeable start to June in the Netherlands, marked by periods of heavy showers, is expected to shift into a warmer pattern later in the month, while early signals for July point to increasing uncertainty, including a possible return of northerly winds and cooler conditions along coastal areas, WeerOnline reports.

After a relatively cool and unsettled first half of June, warmer air from the south is expected to move in for the remainder of the month. Temperatures are forecast to rise to summer values of around 25 degrees regionally, with a chance of a brief peak up to 30 degrees. Conditions are expected to be mostly dry with plenty of sunshine, although the warm and humid air mass may still produce occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms. Recent rainfall has left the ground saturated, contributing to high humidity levels.

The warmer period is expected to support outdoor activities such as beach visits and swimming pools. However, sea temperatures remain low at around 15 degrees, meaning the water is still considered cold for most swimmers.

Sun intensity is high during this time of year, with a UV index of 7, meaning skin can begin to burn within 10 to 20 minutes of exposure. The strongest sun levels typically occur from late March through September, making sun protection necessary during clear conditions.

At the same time, the improved weather conditions also bring increased challenges for allergy sufferers. Grass pollen levels are currently high as grasses are in full bloom.

Recent rainfall and favorable growing conditions have supported strong grass growth. In dry and sunny conditions, pollen spreads more easily through the air, leading to symptoms including sneezing, watery eyes, a runny nose, and shortness of breath. The hay fever season typically begins as early as December, during mild weather, and can last through October, with peak levels occurring later in the spring and summer.

Looking ahead to July, forecasts show growing uncertainty. Early July maximum temperatures typically range between 20 and 24 degrees. Current model guidance suggests slightly warmer-than-average conditions, with daytime highs around 21 to 25 degrees. However, meteorologists do not expect sustained tropical heat reaching 30 degrees or higher.

There is also a possibility that winds will frequently shift to a northerly direction. If that pattern develops, cooler air from the North Sea would be drawn in, particularly affecting coastal regions, where temperatures would be lower than inland areas. After a relatively dry start, cloud cover and shower activity are also expected to increase later in the month, which could make conditions both cooler and wetter regionally.
