New wave of ATM explosions hits the Netherlands; Teen injured in Amsterdam

Multiple cash deposit machines were destroyed in a series of explosions across the Netherlands from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, leaving a teenage girl injured and authorities investigating whether the attacks are connected.

In Lopik, Utrecht, an unknown group blew up a Geldmaat cash deposit machine on Anna van Burenstraat. The police said the damage was extensive, and the apartment above the machine was evacuated as a precaution. It is not yet known whether any money was taken.

In Amsterdam-Nieuw-West, a deposit machine on Slotermeerlaan was also destroyed. Police reported significant damage, including broken windows in the building above. A teenage girl was injured by flying glass and received hospital treatment. Whether the perpetrators obtained cash has not been confirmed.

The attacks follow earlier incidents this week. On Tuesday, two deposit machines were destroyed within 30 minutes of each other: one on Marconistraat in Badhoevedorp and another on Dorpsstraat in Landsmeer.

In Badhoevedorp, suspects fled on a motor scooter, and police arrested two men in Amsterdam shortly afterward. Police said different perpetrators were involved in the Landsmeer blast, but a possible connection between the incidents is under investigation. It is unclear if any cash was stolen.

The series of explosions began on Monday. At 5:10 a.m., a deposit machine at Plein 1945 in Laren was damaged, with two masked suspects fleeing on a scooter. No injuries were reported. Earlier that morning, at 3:45 a.m., a machine at a supermarket on Sloterkade in Amsterdam-Zuid was destroyed. Residents heard the blast as far as Beethovenstraat. Police sealed off the street and deployed explosives teams to investigate; the suspects remain at large. Authorities are also reviewing a possible link to a mid-March ATM explosion at a hotel in Amsterdam.
