Rotterdam metro to The Hague to run every five minutes by 2033
The Rotterdam metro between Rotterdam and The Hague will run every five minutes on weekdays starting in 2033, city and regional officials said. Currently, trains run every ten minutes. The C-line segment between Capelsebrug and Hoogvliet will also increase service to 12 trains per hour during peak periods, Trouw reports.
The Metropoolregio Rotterdam Den Haag (MRDH) will invest nearly 1 billion euros to fund infrastructure upgrades, new metro vehicles, and the expansion and modernization of the Waalhaven maintenance depot. Regional operator RET will implement the project.
Linda Boot, director of RET, said the higher frequency will make metro travel more attractive. “Traveling by metro becomes more appealing when a train runs every five minutes,” she said. She added that the improvements are expected to boost daily ridership from 280,000 to 330,000 passengers.
The metro upgrades are part of a broader plan to accommodate rapid regional growth. Around 50,000 new homes will be built along the E- and C-line corridors in the coming years, and the southern Randstad is expected to gain approximately 400,000 new residents by 2040.
The MRDH, a cooperative of 21 municipalities in Zuid-Holland, manages regional transport and infrastructure projects for the metropolitan area.
