CDA's Berendsen, a member of the European Parliament, named Minister of Foreign Affairs

CDA Member of the European Parliament Tom Berendsen will serve as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the incoming Jetten I Cabinet, according to insiders.

Berendsen, 42, a contemporary of CDA party leader Bontenbal, has been a Europarliamentarian, with his appointment reportedly anticipated in advance within political circles. The party is expected to formally announce the ministerial lineup on Monday.

Berendsen’s appointment strengthens the CDA’s presence in the new cabinet and gives the party a key role in foreign policy. “His name has been circulating for some time, and it is now confirmed that he will take on this key portfolio,” one insider told ANP.

While Berendsen will take Foreign Affairs, other ministerial assignments are also becoming clear. Bart van den Brink, also from the CDA, is set to become Minister of Asylum and Migration, according to leaked reports.

VVD party leader Dilan Yesilgöz has chosen to become Minister of Defense, with Ruben Brekelmans moving from that post to serve as VVD parliamentary leader. David van Weel is returning to the Ministry of Justice, and Vincent Karremans is being assigned to Infrastructure and Water Management.

D66 has announced two appointments: Rianne Letschert will become Minister of Education, and Hans Vijlbrief will serve as Minister of Social Affairs and Employment.

Yesilgöz explained her decision on the defense portfolio: “My heart lies with security. And if you look at where the greatest threats come from, they are international.” She acknowledged the post will not be easy, given the significant budget allocated to defense.
