Aruba police gun down “aggressive psychiatric patient”

A 36-year-old man was fatally shot by Aruban police on Tuesday afternoon, local time. Police said the man, a patient at a psychiatric facility, had become aggressive and was armed with a machete, and was shot after advancing toward an officer with the weapon.

Officers responded after the psychiatric clinic, called Respaldo, reported an aggressive patient. Attempts to de-escalate the situation on arrival failed. Following the shooting, the man was transported to the hospital by ambulance, but he, who was born in Aruba, passed away shortly thereafter.

The incident is being investigated and has been handed over to the Landsrecherche on the island, as a police officer was involved. The independent department’s mandate is to investigate “all incidents involving the use of firearms by police or law enforcement officers resulting in injury or death,” as well as “other incidents concerning serious injuries or fatalities involving the police,” the office states on its website. The results of their investigations are handed off to prosecutors, who then decide whether to press charges against the officers involved.

Aruba has recently faced significant controversy over police use of deadly force. In February 2025, two officers were later formally prosecuted after fatally shooting a 19‑year‑old man named Ayden C’Jay Lanoy during a police stop and pursuit. Hundreds of media reports and community reactions highlighted tension between the public and police over that incident.

There were broader debates on police conduct, with civil society activists and family members pushing for accountability and changes in policing practices, including demands for body cameras and clearer use‑of‑force protocols.

Earlier in 2026, Aruba’s police force faced internal issues, including the arrest of a senior officer (subinspecteur) for alleged threats with a firearm, sparking discussions about disciplinary standards and police conduct within the force.
