Snow and technical failures trigger widespread delays on Dutch trains
Heavy snowfall and technical problems are causing widespread train delays and cancellations across the Netherlands, leaving commuters facing disrupted schedules on multiple Intercity and Sprinter services, NS reports.
According to ProRail, the organization responsible for maintaining the country’s rail infrastructure, it works to ensure that all trains run according to the scheduled timetable. However, disruptions can occur due to infrastructure failures, collisions, train defects, or extreme weather conditions. Saturday’s disruptions reflect the impact of both snow and technical failures.
Snow has affected the Eindhoven to Heerlen line, where travelers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes until late Sunday evening. Technical failures, including switch malfunctions, are also affecting numerous routes throughout the country, compounding the disruption.
NS reported that trains between Amsterdam and Utrecht are running at reduced capacity due to a switch failure that is expected to persist until early afternoon.
Services between Utrecht and Eindhoven, as well as between Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch, have been temporarily suspended, and Intercity trains between Utrecht and Rotterdam are operating less frequently than usual.
Other affected routes include Utrecht to The Hague and Utrecht to Amersfoort, where delays are expected until the early afternoon.
Sprinter services to and from Breukelen are also disrupted, with passengers facing up to 30 minutes of additional travel time. NS advised travelers to consider alternative routes, including via Abcoude.
The disruptions come alongside ongoing maintenance work on other lines. The Groningen–Leer connection will be under maintenance until June 30, while altered schedules will continue on the Arnhem–Duisburg–Düsseldorf route until February 7. NS urged passengers, particularly those with mobility challenges, to plan extra time for their journeys.
