Winter weather warning: snow, ice, 90 km/h gusts across Netherlands this weekend

Drivers should expect slippery roads from Thursday evening as winter showers and freezing wet surfaces affect the central and eastern Netherlands. The KNMI has issued a nationwide yellow weather warning starting Friday.

The yellow warning is expected to last into Saturday, with 1 to 3 centimeters of snow possible in some areas. While 1 to 3 centimeters of snow is expected overall, the KNMI warns that heavier winter showers on Friday could produce more than 3 centimeters in some areas.

The KNMI uses color codes to show the potential danger of the weather. A yellow warning indicates possible hazardous conditions that could cause local disruption. Drivers are advised to be cautious and adjust speed and distance accordingly.

Before the winter showers arrive, a yellow warning for strong wind gusts applies to the Wadden area and the provinces of Noord-Holland, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel. Gusts of around 90 kilometers per hour are expected from the northwest, easing overnight.

Rijkswaterstaat and regional road managers may carry out salting and other maintenance measures to enhance safety, depending on conditions in each area.

Drivers are advised to be careful on bridges, overpasses, and other spots where wet roads can freeze at night. These icy patches are often hard to spot and can be hazardous.
