58-year-old detained after major fire at Leeuwarden auto recycling company
Police have arrested a 58-year-old man from Leeuwarden in connection with a major fire that destroyed approximately 20 vehicles at an auto recycling company early Saturday morning. According to Omrop Fryslân, authorities believe the blaze was deliberately set.
The fire broke out at the company on James Wattstraat, located in the De Zwette industrial area, in the early hours of Saturday. The closely parked cars allowed the fire to spread rapidly, causing extensive damage to the building.
The facade was also damaged, several windows shattered, and multiple fire hotspots were reported on the roof.
The suspect was taken into custody Saturday evening following a review of video footage that provided “a clear picture of arson,” according to a police spokesperson. He is currently in detention and undergoing questioning.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Firefighters brought the fire under control by 8:30 a.m., the safety region reported.
