Rain returns to the Netherlands with southwest winds bringing stormy week

The Netherlands will see a sharp change in weather Sunday evening as clouds and rain spread from the southwest, ending a mostly sunny weekend, weeronline reports. According to forecasts, the country faces a week of unsettled, often wet weather.

Sunday began with widespread sunshine, especially across the east and northeast, where it remained dry and pleasant through the afternoon. In Zeeland and other southwestern regions, however, clouds thickened early, blocking the sun. By late afternoon, the first bands of rain reached the southwest, moving gradually northeastward. Temperatures rose to around 12 degrees in the north and up to 16 degrees in the south.

By Sunday evening, skies across the country will turn cloudy as a broad area of rain moves in from the southwest. Overnight into Monday, rainfall is expected to intensify before easing toward morning. Nighttime temperatures will remain mild, around 12 degrees.

Monday will start with lingering rain in the north and northeast, but skies will brighten elsewhere as dry weather and sunshine return through the morning. Temperatures will remain above normal for mid-October, reaching around 15 degrees in the south by mid-morning.

In the afternoon, warmer air will continue to flow in on a moderate southeasterly wind, pushing daytime highs between 15 and 18 degrees nationwide. The east will stay mostly dry for much of the day, while the southwest will again see clouds building and a few strong showers developing later.

Monday evening and into the night, the weather will turn notably more unsettled. The wind will shift from south to southwest and strengthen considerably, bringing widespread heavy showers and possible thunderstorms. Along the coast, wind gusts may reach around 75 kilometers per hour during intense squalls.

Tuesday will remain changeable as more showers move in from the southwest. Although the day will not be entirely washed out, frequent rain is expected. Temperatures will hover around 15 to 16 degrees. Winds from the southwest will stay strong, reaching force 4 inland and up to force 6 along the coast.

The rest of the week will stay dominated by southwesterly winds, keeping conditions mild but unsettled. Daily highs will average around 15 degrees, with nighttime lows near 10 degrees. Forecasters warn that Thursday and Friday could bring particularly windy conditions, while next weekend may usher in cooler air.
