TikTok prank shows fake burglar, sparks dozens of police call-outs
A viral TikTok trend showing fake “homeless burglars” inside homes triggered dozens of false police call-outs, as parents panicked after receiving AI-generated clips that appeared to show an intruder in their house. In at least two cases, police deployed a helicopter to search neighborhoods.
Officer Frans Luijten, known on TikTok as Politie Frans, posted a video addressing the issue. The caption reads, “Pranking is super fun, but don’t let it get too far out of hand. (The helicopter went flying because, with this prank, the bum had stolen stuff, so it was a burglary.) For now, he has finally been arrested.” Luijten is a police officer in the Oost-Brabant district known for connecting with young people through social media.
Authorities emphasized that while the videos might seem harmless, the false reports divert valuable resources from real emergencies. They urged parents to talk to their children about the consequences of using AI irresponsibly and warned that deliberately triggering false alarms could result in criminal charges.
