Zaandam kebab shop fire brought under control
A fire broke out Saturday evening in a kebab shop on Damstraat in the center of Zaandam, forcing evacuations and a large emergency response, AD reports. Five people who were inside the building when the fire started were checked by ambulance personnel but were not injured, according to the regional safety authority.
The fire began around 9:20 p.m. in the roof of the restaurant, making it difficult to extinguish. Thick black smoke was seen coming from a roof window of an upstairs apartment.
The fire service deployed three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera to locate hotspots and monitor changes in the situation. Visitors of a restaurant next to the kebab shop left the building as a precaution.
The fire was classified as a “large fire,” the safety authority said. Around midnight, officials confirmed the blaze was under control, though firefighters continued to extinguish remaining hot spots.
