Three more men arrested for posing as cops and scamming dozens of people
Rotterdam police arrested three men on Tuesday for posing as police officers. The men, aged 20, 21, and 23, are believed to have stolen from and defrauded dozens of people across the Netherlands. They are also suspected of computer intrusion and participation in a criminal organization. The arrests come a day after two men were arrested for posing as police officers in Noord-Holland. The men were arrested in Aerdenhout.
The trio mainly targeted elderly people. The fake police officers tried to gain the victims' trust by using distraction tactics.
Rob den Besten, lead investigator of the Rotterdam Police Unit, described the reports as harrowing. “Victims are left not only saddened, but unable to trust anyone anymore, not even us,” he said.
“These criminals are truly cunning, ruthless, and relentless,” said Den Besten. “This morning, we arrested three men. One of them even threw his phone out the window. It was pointless, though, because a drone allowed us to see exactly where the phone landed.”
In total, Rotterdam police arrested five men in two days for impersonating police officers. The men are being held in isolation, which means they are only allowed contact with their lawyer.
