2-year-old girl left alone for hours rescued by police in Rotterdam

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, authorities rescued a 2-year-old girl from an apartment in Rotterdam after she had been left alone for hours, with her mother unreachable.

Police in Rotterdam were alerted Saturday evening by neighbors who reported that a child had been crying continuously for hours in a home in the Oud-Mathenesse neighborhood. With the assistance of the fire department, officers forced entry and removed the girl from the residence.

She has been placed in foster care, the Crisis Intervention Team of Youth Protection Rotterdam Rijnmond said.

In an Instagram post, the team reported that police contacted the Child Protection Board to request an emergency order from the juvenile court. The order allowed the child to be temporarily placed in foster care.

The Crisis Intervention Team has since been able to reach the mother but said there is still too much uncertainty about the home environment to return the child safely.
