Third explosion hits Almelo neighborhood in one week, police investigate possible link
A third explosion occurred near a home on Hoornbladstraat in Almelo’s De Riet district early Saturday morning, raising alarm in the community, Tubantia reports. The blast occurred around 3:30 a.m. and caused damage to the house, police and housing corporation officials confirmed.
Police responded promptly with multiple units and a specialist from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (TEV) examined the site. While the explosion damaged the residence, the occupant and a pet were unharmed. Authorities have called on witnesses or anyone with surveillance footage to come forward to aid the investigation.
This incident follows two previous explosions at a nearby home on De IJsduiker street, one on Thursday evening and another the day before. Police are investigating whether the three blasts are connected, but no official link has yet been established. Residents allegedly appeared unfazed by the latest explosion, calling the housing block “notorious.”
The Hoornbladstraat property, along with the De IJsduiker homes, is owned by the Almelo housing corporation Beter Wonen. Marjan Nekkers, director of Beter Wonen, described the damage as limited to broken glass and stressed that no one was injured. “Material damage can be repaired, and we are committed to making both homes habitable again,” she told Tubantia.
Nekkers acknowledged the community’s concerns about a potential connection between the incidents but said, “While explosions have occurred at both locations and police are investigating, I have not heard of any confirmed link or ongoing issues in this neighborhood. Regardless, this is not a pleasant situation.”
