Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman wins third European title with England women's national team
National coach Sarina Wiegman has retained the European title with the English women’s team, defeating world champions Spain 3-1 on penalties in the final in Basel. The Dutch coach found it hard to believe that she had won her third European title. “I actually can’t believe it myself,” she said after the penalty shootout victory. “I’m so incredibly proud of this team.”
Wiegman referred to England’s resilience. In both the quarterfinals against Sweden and the semifinals against Italy, the team came close to elimination, but they pulled through. England also fought back from behind against Spain.
“I must admit that this was the most chaotic and ridiculous tournament we have played. Every time we could come back: the quarter-final, semi-final, and now the final. We have players that have talent, and the togetherness of this team is really incredible, but also the belief that we can come back,” Wiegman told Yahoo Sports.
“The players say we can win by any means, and we just never, ever give up. Today, of course, we had moments where we really had to fight, but I thought we also had some very good moments in the game. The belief, the comeback.”
“Turns out we love football chaos,” the jubilant coach said, according to Sportstar. Asked how she planned to celebrate, she said: “Maybe with some more dancing. I might have a drink, but I will not be drinking as much as the players.”
This is Wiegman’s third European title. She won her first one with the Dutch national women’s team in 2017 and won with England in 2022.
