Car crashes into Hoogeveen town hall, driver arrested on arson and vandalism charges

In the early hours of Monday, a car crashed into the façade of the town hall (Compagnieshuis) in Hoogeveen, igniting a fire shortly after the collision, RTV Drenthe reports. The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m.

Emergency services quickly extinguished the blaze. Police subsequently arrested a 42-year-old man from Elim, a village within the Hoogeveen municipality, near the Raadhuisplein. He is being held on suspicion of arson and vandalism.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine the cause and motivation behind the attack. Authorities have appealed to witnesses and owners of nearby surveillance cameras to come forward with any relevant footage.

A municipal spokesperson confirmed that the car collision damaged the entrance door, causing it to become dislodged. To accommodate visitors, the municipality has established a detour to an alternative entrance. The spokesperson emphasized that city services continue uninterrupted despite the damage, noting, “That is all going smoothly.”

The police also reported that the suspect did not require medical treatment following the crash and fire. The full extent of the damage to the town hall has yet to be assessed.
