Concrete thrown from overpass suspected after multiple vehicles damaged on A1

Several vehicles were damaged overnight on the A1 highway near tank station De Hucht on the Veluwe after large chunks of concrete were found scattered across the road. Authorities suspect the debris may have been intentionally thrown from a nearby overpass.

According to regional newspaper De Stentor, multiple cars and trucks were unable to avoid the concrete. Six vehicles sustained such extensive damage that they had to be towed from the scene. Police officers removed the heavy debris from the roadway.

A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch national highway authority, said it has been confirmed that the concrete did not break off naturally from the overpass. “It’s up to the police to determine whether this was intentional,” the spokesperson said, noting that while intent is not being officially declared at this stage, the origin of the concrete is clearly external to the structure.

The incident comes just one week after two similar cases occurred on the A50 near Klarenbeek, only a short distance from the latest site. At that time, Rijkswaterstaat said there was strong suspicion of deliberate action, with a spokesperson stating: “We strongly suspect that someone threw the object down.”
