Man stabbed at Middelburg asylum center; police arrest suspect in Vlissingen
A 36-year-old man from Middelburg was arrested early Saturday morning in connection with a stabbing at an asylum seekers center in Middelburg that left one person seriously injured, according to police.
The stabbing occurred around 12:30 a.m. Friday at the AZC on Laurens Stommesweg. Police received a report that someone had been stabbed and was injured. Multiple officers responded to the scene and found a man with a stab wound. Paramedics treated the victim on site, and a trauma helicopter was also deployed. The victim was then rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Police immediately launched an investigation, speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage. Based on their findings, officers identified a suspect and began searching for him. Around 4 a.m., the man was located and arrested in the center of Vlissingen. Police said they are still determining the suspect's role in the stabbing. He remains in custody and is being questioned.
Earlier that evening, shortly before 10 p.m., police were also called to the same location for a fight. Authorities are investigating whether the earlier altercation is connected to the stabbing.
