Body found in Noord-Brabant lake after swimmer goes missing

Authorities recovered a body Sunday morning in the Radioplassen lake in Noord-Brabant, near Stevensbeek, following a prolonged search for a man who went missing while swimming alone Saturday evening, Omroep Brabant reports.

The swimmer, whose identity has not been confirmed, reportedly got into trouble halfway across the lake. According to a police spokesperson, he cried out for help before disappearing beneath the surface. A bystander attempted to rescue him but was unsuccessful.

Eyewitnesses, a group of Romanian men who were at the lake at the time, stated that they saw the man struggling as he attempted to swim back to shore. “He called out, ‘Save, save,’” one of the men told Omroep Brabant Sunday morning at the lake. “One of us jumped in to help, but he was gone.” The group said they did not know the swimmer.

Police were alerted Saturday evening, and an extensive search was launched. Despite hours of effort, the swimmer had not been located by midnight, and the operation was suspended. The search resumed Sunday morning using specialized equipment, including a sonar boat and a police helicopter. After several hours, search teams located a body at a depth of eight meters.

“Divers will retrieve the body from the water. For now, our focus is on establishing the identity of the individual and informing the family and next of kin,” police said in a statement around noon.
