14 police officers injured, 22 men arrested in Eindhoven riots after PSV title win

What began as a citywide celebration of PSV Eindhoven's championship title turned violent Sunday night when riots broke out near the stadium, resulting in injuries to 14 police officers and the arrest of 22 men, according to the police. The disturbance, centered on the Vonderweg, was triggered after police attempted to arrest a man for setting off and throwing heavy fireworks.

According to the officers, the atmosphere shifted abruptly around 7:30 p.m. when officers tried to apprehend the individual near the stadium. A large group of rioters then confronted the officers directly, launching stones, glass, traffic signs, and heavy fireworks in their direction.

The riot police (ME) was deployed to restore order and carried out multiple charges. “We are aware that this may have looked intense, but the level of violence our officers faced was extreme,” police stated in an official release.

Of the 14 officers injured, two were bitten by a police service dog and required hospital treatment. Another officer sustained a facial injury and was treated in an ambulance. The remaining officers suffered minor injuries from punches, kicks, and being hit by thrown objects.

The 22 men arrested face charges including public disorder, obstructing and hindering police, failing to comply with orders, throwing heavy fireworks, and engaging in public violence. Four of the suspects remain in custody; the rest were released late Sunday night. All will be issued official police reports. Authorities are also considering whether to impose area bans on certain individuals.

“The championship is a reason to celebrate, and we want to make room for that—but only within the bounds of the law,” police said. “Unfortunately, a small group of rioters tainted the celebration. We draw the line at criminal acts and violence against police officers. We take firm action in such cases.”

A formal investigation has been launched into the violence. Police are working to identify and track down additional suspects. “We do not rule out more arrests,” authorities said.

Officials are also calling on the public to assist in the investigation. “Do you have footage showing suspects or criminal activity that you haven’t yet shared with police? Please do so,” the statement urged.
