Teen suspects in death of Hague student now accused of planning another killing

Two teenagers arrested after the death of a 16-year-old student at the Hofstad Lyceum in The Hague are now suspected of plotting to kill or seriously assault someone else, prosecutors said Friday.

The 15- and 19-year-old suspects were initially detained in mid-February in connection with the firearm involved in the student’s death. While police had ruled out foul play in the student’s death, further investigation led authorities to suspect that the two were planning another violent attack.

The student was found gravely wounded on February 5 inside the school and was rushed to a hospital, where he died a day later from a gunshot wound. Police determined that his death was not the result of a crime, classifying it as an accident or possible suicide.

The intended target has not been disclosed by the Openbaar Ministerie (OM), the Dutch public prosecution service. Authorities are also investigating whether the deceased student played any role in the alleged plot.

Following new findings, prosecutors were given approval to extend the suspects' pretrial detention. The 15-year-old will remain in custody for another 30 days, while the 19-year-old’s detention has been extended by 90 days.
