Suspect in threats against singer Douwe Bob to appear before court Friday
A 38-year-old man from Amsterdam accused of threatening musician Douwe Bob and possessing drugs will remain in custody until at least Friday, when a judge will decide whether to extend his detention by two weeks, AD reports. The man, identified as Bob T., is the leader of the Amsterdam Defence Force, or ADF, a conservative graffiti group that claims to fight the “sellout” of Amsterdam’s culture.
The Public Prosecution Service Midden-Nederland confirmed Wednesday that Bob T. was arrested earlier this week. Prosecutors declined to specify which drugs were seized or in what quantity, and they also refused to detail the exact nature of the threats.
ADF was established shortly before the coronavirus pandemic, declaring its mission to “protect Amsterdam culture” from expats and outsiders. The group has become known for its aggressive slogans, including “fuck the police” and “Halsema Moet Opkankeren,” a vulgar call for Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema to leave office. ADF has publicly supported the Israeli bombings in Gaza and is outspoken in favor of Zwarte Piet, the controversial tradition involving blackface during Sinterklaas celebrations.
In a private Instagram chat with Douwe Bob, Bob T. sent a photo of a location somewhere in Abcoude, where the singer has lived with his family since 2023. The message read, “Half of fucking Amsterdam wants your head on a street tile.” According to Douwe Bob and his girlfriend, the messages were perceived as a deliberate attempt to track them down.
ADF’s main account also warned a day earlier that the group had obtained the singer’s home address. It remains unclear whether Bob T. himself was behind that message.
Douwe Bob announced publicly that he and his family had decided to leave the Netherlands temporarily for their safety. While he reportedly consulted police, authorities said he made the decision on his own and arranged his own transportation.
The threats followed an incident last weekend when Douwe Bob refused to perform at a Jewish children’s football event. The singer stated that he had agreed with organizers there would be no political displays, but he left after seeing what he described as Zionist posters. The cancellation ignited a national controversy, culminating in VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius accusing him of antisemitism and referencing World War II. Douwe Bob demanded an apology, but Yeşilgöz-Zegerius said she would not offer one.
People close to Bob T. have reportedly questioned whether he is genuinely capable of violence, describing him as “too cowardly” to pose a real physical threat. However, they acknowledged that he can incite others to act recklessly. According to the singer’s management, Douwe Bob also received numerous messages of support alongside the threats.
Bob T. is expected to appear Friday before an examining magistrate in Utrecht to determine whether his pretrial detention will be extended.
