Police link two teens to gun that caused high school student’s death in The Hague

Two teens were arrested in connection with an incident at a high school in The Hague that left one student dead earlier this month. The 16-year-old’s death was not directly caused by a crime, but did involve a firearm that was brought to the Hofstad Lyceum.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy on Thursday. The two residents of The Hague “came into the picture after an investigation into the origin of the weapon that seriously injured” the student, police wrote in a statement.

The incident happened on February 5 at the school on Colijnplein. The 16-year-old from The Hague was found with head was covered in blood and was rushed by ambulance to an area hospital.

“He looked bad and had injuries to his face,” a witness told Omroep West at the time. He died from his injuries a day later.

“The investigation has shown that no crime was committed. The further findings from the investigation into the incident have only been shared with the relatives for privacy reasons,” police reiterated.

“Because a firearm was involved in the incident, a separate investigation into the origin of that weapon followed. This revealed the identity of the suspects who have now been arrested,” the statement noted.

Both suspects were being kept in restricted custody, and were only allowed to communicate with an attorney. They were expected to be questioned on Wednesday or Thursday. It is not yet known when they could face an initial hearing before an examining magistrate.
