KNMI extends weather warnings; multiple New Year's events canceled
The KNMI has extended its weather warnings for North Holland, Friesland, Groningen, and South Holland, citing the potential for hazardous conditions due to strong winds. The warning will remain in effect in all areas until midnight on Dec. 31.
Previously, on December 28, the KNMI issued a code yellow warning for dense fog, which has since been lifted.
The current warnings indicate that during the New Year's period, the northwestern regions of the Netherlands may experience severe wind gusts.
The KNMI advises that these wind gusts could lead to increased risks of injury and fire, particularly when combined with fireworks during celebrations.
The institute notes that overland wind gusts may reach up to 80 km/h, while coastal areas could see gusts up to 100 km/h, primarily from a southwesterly direction.
In response to these warnings, several municipalities have adjusted their New Year's events.
In Scheveningen and Duindorp, annual bonfires were ignited earlier than usual to mitigate risks associated with the forecasted winds. Similarly, in Amsterdam's Floradorp, bonfires were held ahead of schedule. Conversely, Tilburg has canceled its New Year's Eve show entirely due to safety concerns.
Alkmaar, however, has announced that its end-of-year shows will proceed as planned, despite the code yellow warning.However, the municipality stated that certain aspects of the shows would be adjusted to ensure public safety.
