Storm Anna: Strong winds causing some issues at Schiphol Airport

Storm Anna brought strong winds and showers to the Netherlands on Thursday, causing flight cancellations and delays at Schiphol Airport and prompting weather warnings across multiple provinces.

Air traffic was disrupted as the storm moved in. By noon, airlines at Schiphol canceled 13 departing flights, with 130 more experiencing delays ranging from a few minutes to about two hours. Ten inbound flights were canceled, and 131 arrivals were delayed by at least a few minutes.

European air traffic center Eurocontrol warned that arriving flights would face “moderate to high delays” in Amsterdam from about 2 p.m. due to crosswinds.

“Storm Anna brings strong winds across the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany, along with frequent showers with a risk of snow [and] mixed rain and snow later,” Eurocontrol said in a bulletin.

The province of Noord-Holland, which includes Schiphol Airport, remained under a Code Yellow weather warning for strong winds until 4 p.m. on Thursday.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) predicted gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour along the northern coast, with strong gale-force winds expected elsewhere in the province and at least until the end of the day.

Officials also warned of icy roads set to affect parts of the country starting Friday morning. The icy conditions are expected in Noord-Holland, as well as in Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel. Authorities urged drivers and travelers to exercise caution and to allow extra time for travel.
