Another seven arrests made in connection with Plein ’40-’45 riots in Amsterdam
Another seven arrests were made on Tuesday regarding the riots that took place on Plein ’40- ’45, in Amsterdam, on the evening hours of Monday, December 11, leading into Tuesday, November 12. The ages of the suspects range from 14 to 21 years old. They are suspected of public violence, police reported.
Two suspects had already been arrested for setting fire to vehicles and assaulting a passerby on a bicycle. This came days after the violence in Amsterdam city center surrounding the AFC Ajax match against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The violence on Plein ’40-’45 started at around 7:45 p.m. on November 11. Bricks, wooden beams, and heavy fireworks were thrown at a van, bus, and tram. A person cycling by was assaulted along with a police officer. The cyclist was hit and kicked by several people while he was lying on the ground.
Shortly after this, a tram was blocked by the rioters before it was hit by objects. The conductor and the passengers in the tram left before fireworks were thrown into the tram, leading to a large fire. Heavy fireworks were also found during the arrests.
The police reported no injuries that required hospitalization during the events. One of the rioters got hurt while setting off a firework. Paramedics treated the person at the scene.
