Polish migrant workers found dead in Wassenaar hotel used by employment agency

The two people found dead in a hotel in Wassenaar on Tuesday morning were Polish migrant workers, a man and a woman, who worked at a flower wholesaler, according to various local media. Their bodies were found under suspicious circumstances in Hotel Wassenaar, a former hotel currently used by an employment agency to house migrant workers.

The police responded to a report of an accident involving dangerous substances at the hotel on Katwijkseweg at around 5:20 a.m. on Tuesday. They found the two deceased people at the scene. According to NOS, the entire building was evacuated.

AD reported that the victims were found in a room on the first floor of the former hotel. A resident of the building told the newspaper that they were a man and a woman who worked at a flower wholesaler. Leidsche Dagblad reported that the victims were Polish. According to Omroep West, a sign bearing the name of the employment agency Lider Job is attached to the facade of the former hotel.

The police have released no further information beyond their early morning post on X reporting the discovery of the deceased persons and saying they were investigating. “All scenarios are still open. It could be a crime, but it could also be that these people made that decision themselves,” a police spokesperson told NU.nl early on Tuesday morning.

Mayor Leendert de Lange of Wassenaar said that he was saddened by the news of the victims’ deaths. “This affects us as a community and my thoughts go out to the relatives and everyone affected by this loss,” he said in response. “The police are carefully investigating the situation and I am confident that they will do everything they can to provide clarity.”
