There are massive differences in the costs involved in getting a building permit for new homes from Dutch municipalities, according to homeowners' association VEH. The association wants Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs to put an end to the large differences in municipal building fees, Omroep West reports.
Three men drowned on Sunday evening while swimming off the coasts of The Hague and Wassenaar. Emergency services received a report of a swimmer in trouble at the Zuiderstrand in The Hague at 18:30 p.m. At around the same time, there was also a report of two swimmers needing help at the Wassenaarse Slag in Wassenaar, the police said.
After several rounds of voting, senators in the Netherlands selected Professor Jan Anthonie Bruijn as the new chairperson of the Eerste Kamer, the upper house of Dutch parliament. The 61-year-old professor of immunopathology at Leiden University has been involved in politics as a VVD member since 1989 when he first became a local VVD board member in hometown of Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland.
Bruijn takes the reins from VVD politican Ankie Broekers-Knol. She was tapped as justice and security secretary last month.

A 3-year-old girl drowned in a ditch in amusement park Duinrell in Wassenaar on Sunday. She was missing for some time before emergency workers found her body. "Despite lifesaving actions, the girl died at the scene", the police said, NU.nl reports.
The police and fire brigade responded in large numbers to search for the girl. Teams of divers and a helicopter were also deployed for the search. People were asked to keep an eye out for the girl and call emergency number 112 on citizens' notification system Burgernet.
The number of homes in the Netherlands worth over a million euros increased by 37 percent to 42,300 last year - a new record for the Netherlands, real estate researcher Calcasa announced on Thursday, NU.nl reports.
The average price tag on one of these homes was 1.36 million euros last year. The average price per square meter was 5,300 euros. Over the past year these million euro homes' values increased by 9.2 percent, compared to an 8 percent value increase for all owned homes in the Netherlands.
Jan Hoekema, husband of recently resigned Senator Marleen Barth, also decided to hand in his resignation. He is stepping down as acting mayor of Langedijk in Noord-Holland, RTL Nieuws reports.
The reason for his resignation is the media commotion that arose around an agreement he made with the municipality of Wassenaar after he retired as mayor of the municipality. Hoekema and Barth arranged that they could stay on in the Wassenaar official mayoral residence at a reduced rent after Hoekema was no longer mayor there.
The Dutch police are calling on motorists who drive a car with a 'smart' key to deactivate their 'keyless entry' function following a series of incidents in which cars were broken into in The Hague area. The thieves were able to empty out the cars without having to break open a door or window.
The 'keyless entry' function automatically unlocks the car when its key comes within its vicinity.

Labour laws were violated in the construction of the new United States embassy in Wassenaar, AD reports. Employees structurally had to work overtime and foreign workers did not have the right papers, according to the newspaper. The Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate is investigating.
People who worked on the embassy told the newspaper that they worked up to 60 hours a week, including Saturday.Workers who protested were sent away. Union FNV's safety hotline also received several complaints about safety at the site.
