Director of Amsterdam fashion platform Moam will be prosecuted for 10 sex crimes
The former director of Amsterdam cultural and fashion platform Moam will be tried for a total of 10 criminal sexual offenses, and an additional charge of attempted aggravated assault. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects Martijn N. of six cases of rape, two charges of attempted rape, and committing sexual acts with two minors.
The 36-year-old's trial will begin on Thursday at the District Court in Amsterdam. He was arrested in January 2022 after 28 men accused him of violent and sexually-inappropriate behavior as part of an investigative report by NRC and Parool.
N. has been kept in pre-trial detention on suspicion of two counts of rape, and one count of sexually penetrating a minor. He is now accused of a total of ten sexual offenses involving nine victims. The OM alleged the suspect ignored the victims' verbal protests at the time of the crimes, and he had physical or psychological authority over them when the incidents happened.
Two of the nine victims are minors, a spokesperson for the OM said. The two minors were 15 years old at the time they were sexually abused. The Public Prosecution Service has dismissed three other charges filed by other male victims due to insufficient evidence.
In addition to the sexual offenses, N. is on trial for attempted aggravated assault. This allegation dates back to April 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden. The victim in that incident was allegedly pushed to the ground, and her head was slammed against the ground. N. was accused of squeezing the victim's throat and kicking the victim.
The court has set aside four days for the trial. N. is represented by his attorney, Gerard Spong. The lawyer was not available for comment on Monday afternoon.
