A 16-year-old boy was critically injured in a stabbing in Helmond at the end of Tuesday night. The boy later died from his injuries, police confirmed. One suspect was taken into custody, and police believe they knew each other and had argued that night.
Witnesses called emergency services about the stabbing on Watermolenwal at around midnight, and dispatchers sent ambulances and police on the ground, and a medical trauma team by helicopter. The victim was found about a hundred meters away on Piet Blomplein. The boy was in such bad shape that first responders had to perform surgery on him on the street.
"Given the severity of the stab injuries, the emergency services immediately started life-saving measures. The victim was then taken to hospital where he later died," police wrote in an update.
"A 20-year-old man from Helmond was standing close to the victim. Based on the initial investigation, he was arrested by the police on suspicion of involvement in the stabbing incident," the police statement continued.
"The victim and the suspect know each other, and we strongly believe that an argument preceded the stabbing incident."
A forensic investigation was carried out at the scene, and officers took witness statements. The Helmond man was expected to be interrogated on Wednesday. He could face an arraignment hearing before the weekend.
