Fatal highway accident: Man run over while helping stranded motorist
A 37-year-old man from The Hague was killed on the A13 highway between The Hague and Rotterdam early on Tuesday morning. He was hit by a car, presumably while he was trying to help someone with a breakdown, the police said in a statement.
"Emergency services did everything possible to save the man, but to no avail," police said on social media.
The accident happened near the interchange with the N209 at the Berkel en Rodenrijs off-ramp, which also serves as the exit for the Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Multiple cars were involved in crashes, with the first happening around 4:10 a.m. At least three ambulances were dispatched to the scene and a trauma team was sent by helicopter.
The highway was closed from the Delft-Zuid exit towards Rotterdam, and was expected to remain closed until at least 10:00 a.m. Motorists traveling from The Hague towards Rotterdam were advised to detour via the A4 and then the A20.
