Man killed in Amsterdam Zuidoost shooting

A man was shot on Hogevecht in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Thursday evening. He died in hospital a short time later.

The shooting happened at around 7:15 p.m., the police said in a statement. The victim was resuscitated at the scene and rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Het Parool identifies the victim as J. Curiel, a man from Amsterdam who has a criminal record, but is not known as a serious criminal. According to the newspaper, he was convicted in the past of a burglary and a mugging, among other things.

The motive behind the shooting is not yet known. The police are investigating and call on witnesses to come forward. Investigators particularly want to talk to the occupants of a small, blue car which was spotted at the scene shortly before the shooting.
