Elderly woman seriously hurt in hit-and-run, police looking for perpetrator

A 79-year-old woman was seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Breda on Sunday night. She was hit by a car as she crossed the street. The motorist left the scene of the accident. The police are looking for the perpetrator, and given the severity of the victim's injuries, decided to release surveillance camera footage of the accident.

The accident happened on Hamdijk in the Biesdonk district. The video shows that the woman was hit by the front of the car and dragged along. After the collision, the motorist drives on for a short distance, the stops next to another car and leaves again. The driver seems to have briefly had contact with the occupants of the other car, the police said.

The victim sustained a broke eye socket and broken ribs, among other things, NOS reports. She also lost a lot of blood. The woman was conscious when emergency services arrived at the scene, but not well able to communicate with them. She was rushed to hospital.

According to the police, the motorist involved in this accident drove a dark-colored car which is now damaged at the front. The police call on the motorist to come forward.

The victim's daughter called the accident very intense, speaking to Omroep Brabant from her holiday destination in Mallorca. The accident happened shortly after her mother left her sister's home. "Around 11:00 p.m.. she went to the bus stop with her walker. And suddenly a car comes flying at her and hits her. My sister heard the blow too. She looked and thought: 'where is my mother?' Then she saw the walker and ran outside."

The elderly woman was transferred to the Erasmus Medical Center on Monday afternoon for surgery. "But we will have to wait and see if she will ever get over this", her daughter said to the broadcaster. She was able to briefly speak with her mother. "She says that everything is going well, so that I don't worry. But I do."
