Man fleeing cops crashes into his house, dies

A 50-year-old man died in the Friesland village of Nieuwhorne on Thursday after he crashed into the wall of his own farmhouse while trying to flee from the police. The police responded to the farm after a report of someone trying to take their own life, NOS reports.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man was sitting in his car in the garage next to his house. The police tried to talk to the man, but he sped off, hitting one police officer. The officer sustained multiple serious bruises, but was not seriously injured. He was sent home after a hospital examination.

As the situation was threatening, the police shot at the car, according to NOS. It caught fire and crashed against the facade of the farm. The man was seriously injured and died at the scene. It is not yet clear whether the car caught fire because of the police shooting or another cause.

The police speak of a terrible drama. The man was known to have problems, Omrop Fryslan reports.
