Dortrecht man, 23, killed in Breda stabbing
A 23-year-old man from Dordrecth was stabbed to death in Breda during the early hours of Sunday morning. A 36-year-old man from Breda was arrested. The police believe the victim was a completely random target, based on witness statements and camera footage of the incident, NOS reports.
The incident happened on Adriaan van Bergenstraat at around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday. Responding officers found the young man bleeding heavily on the street. He was rushed to hospital, where he died a short time later.
Witnesses were able to give the police a clear description of the perpetrator. He was found hiding on Middellaan, across the entrance of parking garage De Prins, a short time later. The 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
According to the police, it is probable that there was no motive for the stabbing. It is possible that the suspect had a confrontation with someone else shortly before the incident, but that is still under investigation. The suspect came up to a group of people, including the victim. "A few people turned around and the first person who ran into the suspect was stabbed", a police spokesperson said to NOS.
The police heard that a fight preceded the stabbing, but thus far found no indications of that. "We are still investigating whether they might have met each other earlier in the evening", the spokesperson said to NOS. "But at this stage, nothing points to that."
