Boy, 14, seriously hurt after being hit by train

A 14-year-old boy was seriously hurt when he was hit by a train in Assen on Monday afternoon. The incident happened around 3:00 p.m. at the rail crossing on Spoorstraat. The police called it an accident, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

Witnesses saw the boy lying on the platform after the accident. "Completely covered in blood, I dared not look any closer", one witness said to the newspaper.

Paramedics and a doctor brought by a trauma helicopter stabilized the boy at the scene and then rushed him to hospital by ambulance.

The accident brought train traffic around Assen to a halt for a short time. The first stranded passengers were transported to their destination by bus, but trains started running again a short time later.
