Traffic accidents on Dutch roads: six killed in 24 hours
Four traffic accidents in Noord-Brabant and Gelderland claimed a total of six lives over the past 24 hours.
Two people were killed in an accident on the A27 near Oosterhout on Sunday night - an 18-year-old woman from France and a man who hasn't been identified yet, Omroep Brabant reports. The car, carrying five people in total, crashed into the guardrail next to the highway around 7:50 p.m. The driver, a 22-year-old man from Italy, lost control of the car. He was arrested. No other cars were involved in the accident. The unidentified man died at the scene. The young woman from Italy died in hospital on Monday morning.
Eyewitnesses told the broadcaster that the driver veered across the road before hitting the guard rail. Two passengers were hurled out of the car and landed in between the crash barriers. The surviving victims said that they had visited Amsterdam and were on their way back to Paris.
Another two people were killed in an accident on Rueckertbaan in Tilburg on Monday morning. A car carrying three people crashed into a tree. One person died at the scene, the second in hospital. The third was seriously injured, the Telegraaf reports. The cause of the accident is still unclear. The police can not yet say anything about the victims' identity.
A 49-year-old woman from Badhoevedorp was killed in an accident involving two motorcycles on the A2 between Zaltbommel and Waardenburg on Sunday. The accident happened on the Martinus Nijhoffbrug, towards Utrecht, De Gelderlander reports. The other motorcycle rider, a 51-year-old man from Badhoevedorp, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The police are investigating what happened. It does not look like the motorcycles crashed into each other, the officer on duty said to De Gelderlander.
An 81-year-old woman from Nuenen was killed when she crashed her delivery van into a tree on Leenderweg in Heeze around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Emergency services tried to resuscitate the victim, but it was to no avail, Omroep Brabant reports. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
