Slovenian truck sought in accident that killed two kids
The police are still looking for a truck that may have been involved in an accident on Sloeweg in Ritthem earlier this month in which two young children were killed. In the investigation into this accident, the police determined that the truck is from Slovenia, the police said in a statement on Tuesday.
The accident happened on December 12th, after a weekend of heavy snow in the Netherlands. A mother, driving with her two young children, ended up on the wrong side of the road and crashed head-on with another car. Two year old Mike died at the scene. His five year old sister Lily died in hospital later.
The police believe that the mother's car may have collided with the Slovenian truck shortly before the fatal accident. "Due to the holidays and international procedures, it will take some time before the identity of the [truck] driver has been determined and his story about the circumstances is known. Further police investigation must show even more accurately what the role of this truck and the driver really was in this sad accident", the police said.
Mike and Lily was buried in Middelburg on Saturday, according to the police. "The family is very grateful for the many expressions of sympathy they received in which ever way", the police said. "The mother of the children has left the hospital and was able to attend the ceremony. Her recovery - in addition to the processing of these traumatic experiences - will take a long time."
