Freezing weather triggers icy roads warning across the Netherlands
Friday is turning out to be a cold day for the Netherlands, with afternoon temperatures expected to range between freezing and -2 degrees. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning, warning motorists to be careful of slick, icy roads across the country.
The icy weather will continue on through Saturday. The western parts of the country will have some snow on Friday night, and it will spread to the eastern parts of the country during the night. The conditions on the roads is expected to be worse on Saturday morning.
The Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat is deploying 1,200 people to work with 546 gritters and 350 snow blades to fight slickness and iciness on the Dutch highways. Rijkswaterstaat advises motorists to be well prepared before taking to the road in winter conditions. Keep a close eye on weather and traffic information. Slow down, drive carefully and keep a safe following distance.
Schiphol also warned that flights may be delayed due to snowfall on Friday evening. "Please check your flight status before traveling to the airport", the airport warned on Twitter.
