Elderly newspaper deliverer attacked in Noord-Holland town

A 72-year-old newspaper deliverer was attacked while delivering papers in the Noord-Holland town of Akersloot on Saturday. He is now recovering from a major head injury, he said to RTV Noord-Holland. Siem Deijlen cycled past three men who were crossing the street. The three men felt he passed them too closely and followed and confronted him. During a heated discussion, they accused Deijlen of trying to run them down. One of the men attacked him. The elderly man ended up on the street, with his head hitting the curb. He briefly lost consciousness. The violence against him deeply affected Deijlen, especially because he realizes it could have been so much worse. "I want to tell this story out of sympathy for the family of the woman who was stabbed to death in Rotterdam", he said to RTV Noord-Holland. He plans to press charges on Monday. Deijlen was referring to a 51-year-old woman who was stabbed in Rotterdam-West while delivering newspapers on Friday, May 13th. She spent several days in critical condition in the hospital, before passing away last week. The police are still looking for the perpetrator.
