Bike thief, 14, tried to steal cop’s gun
A 14-year-old bicycle thief was arrested in Varsseveld on Tuesday after a short chase and a struggle, during which he tried to steal the arresting officer's gun.
The police responded to Karel Doormanstraat on Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call from a local resident reporting that a teenager was going door to door trying to sell a bicycle.
The local resident kept the teenager busy while waiting for the police to arrive, talking to him and even taking the bicycle for a test ride. When the officers arrived at the scene and tried to arrest the boy, he resisted "vehemently" and ran off, according to the police statement.
The officers gave chase and caught up with the boy. Once again he resisted being arrested, kicking and punching and even trying to steal one of the officers' guns. The boy was finally overpowered and arrested with the help of a local resident. He was taken to the police station for questioning.
One officer and the local resident that lent a hand were slightly injured during the arrest.
