Arrest made in Heerlen apartment explosion

Police arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of inadvertently causing an apartment explosion in Heerlen, Limburg on April 20. Authorities are holding the man in restricted custody, and limiting his contact to the outside world as the investigation is ongoing, police said in a statement. The gas explosion severely damaged the apartment block on Van Weerden Poelmanstraat, leveling 18 apartments and causing 1.8 million euros in damage. Several people were injured in the blast. During the investigation, police found evidence of theft and tampering with a gas line. Neither police nor the prosecutor will reveal details about the suspect and his arrest until the restrictions on his custody are lifted, police said.
