Tens of thousands stolen from elderly pair in park

An elderly couple were stripped of tens of thousands of euros in cash during a daytime robbery at a Tilburg park. They were pulling the stack of money in a blue shopping trolley through Reeshofpark when they were jumped by two unknown assailants, police said in a statement. It is not known why the couple was carrying so much cash, police told RTL Nieuws. Police hope to determine if the couple was followed after withdrawing the large sum, or if it was completely coincidental. They had taken the money out of a bank in the Heyhoef shopping center and then went shopping, where they might have been spotted with the cash. The incident happened Monday between 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on the Reeshofdijk bike path. Each of the perpetrators jumped out from some bushes and surprised the couple. They demanded the shopping trolley and scuffled with the couple, who then fell over. The offenders ran from the scene with the elderly man chasing after them. The pair ran to a waiting car and fled the scene. The woman stayed behind having injured her knee. The victims then walked home and called police. The couple said they did not get a good look at the two men who took the money. They stood at about 1.8 meters in height, wearing dark clothes. The husband saw the duo take off in a car, but he was also unable to give a description of the car.
