Soldier arrested with 35 submachine guns; two others held
Police arrested two people when 35 Skorpion sub-machine guns were found in the suspects' car. One of the two arrested is a 29-year-old career soldier from Oss, Noord Brabant, police said in a statement.
The 49 year-old Oss resident in the car with the soldier was also taken into custody. After a search of their homes, police arrested a 27-year-old Polish person with no permanent Netherlands address.
Police stopped the car after receiving a tip that a suspicious package was being brought into the country from abroad. Both an observation team and a tactical arrest unit were involved in the arrest at the car, which took place just after the duo picked up the guns from an address in Oss on December 2.
The car was stopped on Julianasingel, where police found the sub-machine guns with their barrels removed, police said. It was not revealed from where the shipment of guns originated.
A magistrate ordered the men to remain in custody in a hearing on Friday. Further investigation into the case is underway with the assistance of the Royal Marechaussee military police force.
