Joran van der Sloot marries pregnant girlfriend in Peruvian prison
Joran van der Sloot, convicted of the murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores in 2010, has married his pregnant girlfriend from a Peruvian prison. The private ceremony took place at the maximum security prison facility in Lima.
Van der Sloot met his girlfriend Figueroa while she was selling goods inside the prison. They married in a small, closed ceremony inside the Piedras Gordas prison on Friday 27, June. "Joran's mother sent him a suit and shoes for the wedding, but no family members were present”, Altez, attorney for Van der Sloot said.
In an attempt to shoot down local media allegations, Altez insisted "This is not a strategy by van der Sloot to avoid extradition to the United States."
Van der Sloot was convicted of murdering 21 year old Stephany Flores on May 30, 2010. He was also the last person to be seen with missing American teenager Natalee Holloway, who vanished while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba. The teenagers body was never found, and no charges were filled against Van der Sloot.
Van der Sloot is expected to remain in prison until 2038. Following his release, he will be extradited to the United States to face additional charges of extortion and fraud for allegedly promising to help Holloway’s mother find her daughters body in exchange for $250,000.
