While most polling stations for the Provincial States elections opened smoothly and on time on Wednesday morning, there were a few problems. One polling station in Alkmaar is closed due to a fire on Wednesday morning. A number of polling stations in Amsterdam opened over an hour late. And residents of a Rotterdam neighborhood didn't get their voting passes.

Rotterdam is the 3rd best city in Europe when it comes to equality, according to a study by online housing startup Spotahome. Amsterdam performed less well, making it to 18th place in the ranking. The Netherlands as a whole is the 7th most equal city in Europe.

A number of bus companies in the Netherlands still don't meet the wheelchair accessibility standard set in 2012, Trouw reports based on research by DTV Consultants. The 2012 standard states that 98 percent of all buses in the Netherlands must be accessible to disabled people. The study revealed that wheelchair bound people can't take the bus in 8 percent of their attempts to do so, according to the newspaper.
