Last year the median household in the Netherlands had 38,400 euros in assets, 10 thousand euros more than the year before. The increase is mainly due to the increasing home values in the country, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

The median household when it comes to wealth is when you line up all households in the Netherlands from least assets to most and pick the one exactly in the middle. That means that half of households have more in assets and half less than the median household.

The wealth of the median Dutch household increased significantly in 2017, rising by 6 thousand euros to 28,300 euros. This is mainly due to substantial price increases on the housing market, Statistics Netherlands reports. If homeownership is taken out of account, the median wealth increased only slightly compared to 2016 to 14,100 euros.

Statistics Netherlands looked at all the assets and debts of Dutch households. Savings and investment mortgages are not included in these figures as the stats office was not given access to that data. Pensions are also not included.

The average wealth of Dutch households increased by almost 10 percent in 2016, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday based on new figures. This is mainly due to increasing house prices. Dutch without their own home did not see a wealth increase in that year, according to the stats office.

Nearly three in five households owned their home in 2016. An owned home formed the largest part of household's assets at 57 percent, followed by savings. Mortgage was also the largest debt item of Dutch households that year, making up 86 percent of the average household's debt.

The Cabinet of Rutte II must use the rest of its time in government, until 2017, for at least one big reform on taxes that makes working more attractive and demands more taxes from the rich. This position comes from PvdA-leader Diederik Samson, who tells the Volkskrant that the Cabinet should hold back less and must make big investments that boost the economy and employment.
